Businesses Stand To Gain Billions in FET Refunds

Most businesses have already filed their 2006 federal tax returns. Many did not get their full Federal Excise Tax (FET) refund. UAC can get the rest back.

In May, 2006, the IRS ended a portion of the 100+ year old FET on phone bills. In November, 2006 it offered an estimation method for businesses to use in claiming their FET refunds. Businesses using this method are leaving billions of dollars on the table.

There are two (2) inherent shortcomings in the estimation method:

1. Only two months' actual bills (4/06 & 9/06) are used to establish an average which is then applied to the entire 41-month refund period. Any large shifts in telecom usage between those two months will skew the calculation method. Plus any peaks before the sample months will not be accounted for. Either scenario can lower the refund for the entire period.
    
2. Businesses with more than 250 employees using this method have their refunds capped at 1% of the total telephone expense for the refund period. The only truly accurate way to get the full refund is to research all of your telecom bills for the entire refund period - a time-consuming, arduous task. IMPORTANT: Only the long distance, bundled and wireless portion of the tax has ended. FET on local charges still applies. Businesses must be careful to only claim the refund for the tax they paid on long distance, bundled and wireless charges.
